Job Summary
The Teacher Assistant will work closely with classroom teachers to support the educational and personal development of students. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other stakeholders. The role involves a range of responsibilities, including preparing lesson materials, supervising students, and providing extra assistance to students with special needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts and ensure a cohesive learning environment.
- Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations to support teaching and learning.
- Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
- Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips, to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Conduct demonstrations to teach such skills as sports, dancing, and handicrafts, promoting physical, mental, and social development.
- Distribute teaching materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils, to students, and collect them when they are completed.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students, maintaining a positive and respectful learning environment.
- Grade homework and tests, and compute and record results, using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, to prevent injuries and damage.
- Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Organize and label materials, and display students' work in a manner appropriate for their eye levels and perceptual skills.
- Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids, such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs, to support teaching and learning.
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical and mental disabilities.
- Assist in bus loading and unloading, and assist librarians in school libraries.
- Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required, contributing to the development of school policies and procedures.
- Laminate teaching materials to increase their durability under repeated use.
- Maintain computers in classrooms and laboratories, and assist students with hardware and software use.
- Monitor classroom viewing of live or recorded courses transmitted by communication satellites.
- Operate and maintain audiovisual equipment, and use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of experience as a Teacher Assistant or Paraprofessional.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in education or a related field.
- Experience working with students with special needs.
- Knowledge of educational software and technology.
