At OpenLiteracy our mission is to change this statistic through high impact, individualized 1:1 tutoring based on the Science of Reading. We are looking for seasoned educators to join our tutoring team and change the face of literacy in this country. OpenLiteracy tutors are excellent at building relationships, while expertly leading tutoring sessions that balance explicit instruction with students' engaging with text. Our tutors are also wizards at embedding comprehension into each step of the lesson so students are able to have thoughtful and meaningful discussions at all reading levels. We don’t just teach reading, we grow readers. We are looking for certified and retired teachers to join in this mission! You must have experience working with grades K-6 and are able to commit to at least 8 hours per week on a consistent schedule. Priority is given to tutors with experience in Tier 3 intervention, instructing English learners, and working with students with reading disabilities. Entirely Remote All of our tutoring is done remotely; all you need is a reliable device, Wi-Fi, and a quiet place to host your lessons. Competitive Pay Tutors are paid for each tutoring session that they complete and are also paid if a session is scheduled but the student does not show up. For school based clients, advanced cancellations must be made five-days in advance or you receive payment for the session; family clients must cancel 24-hours in advance. Tutors are paid at a rate of $30 an hour for orientation and $15 per 30-minute tutoring session. Initial asynchronous training is paid at a flat rate of $100, contingent on completing 10 tutoring sessions. 1:1 Dedicated Tutoring Students are matched with a tutor, whom they meet with over time. This allows you to leverage your skills in building trusting relationships and getting to know students’ strengths as learners. Each tutor at OpenLiteracy will be responsible for remotely tutoring a range of students K-6. Tutors meet with students 1:1 in 30 minute sessions via our online tutoring platform using a tutoring curriculum designed by OpenLiteracy and aligned with the UFLI Foundations scope and sequence, Once students complete the foundations sequence, they move to our Nonfiction Navigators curriculum to continue to build confidence in reading longer words and texts as well as developing increased fluency. We have a range of tools for English Learners, including Roots, a curriculum for English newcomers. Comprehensive Training & Ongoing Coaching Support All tutors complete a detailed paid training and receive ongoing coaching support from our learning specialist team. YOUR QUALIFICATIONS • You are a certified or retired teacher (non-negotiable) - TOEFL and substitute certification does not meet this requirement • You are available to work during the day 3-4 days per week, Monday - Thursday. • You are authorized to work in the United States with a degree in education or teaching and have K-6 classroom teaching experience • You are a knowledgeable literacy educator, with a background in the Science of Reading including phonics, structured literacy instruction, and how to support students in building reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. • You are obsessed with student learning! We use a data-driven instructional model to help students make huge gains in literacy in a relatively short period of time. Achieving this requires tutors who believe that every student can learn to read well with great literacy instruction. • You have reliable technology and a quiet workspace. OpenLiteracy tutoring lessons take place online. Tutors must have access to reliable, high-speed Internet, a quiet, distraction-free environment to conduct lessons, and a reliable laptop/desktop with camera and microphone functionality. • You are organized and a great time manager. You show up on time, manage a calendar with ease, and are able to manage tutoring sessions to start and end at their scheduled times. • You have a reliable, consistent schedule. Having students meet with the same tutor is an important aspect of our model, and students’ sessions are not cancelled when you are unavailable; if you routinely require a substitute tutor, we will reassign the student to someone with a more reliable schedule. • You are skillful at building relationships. Struggling readers have often experienced a lot of failure in reading. You believe that all students,
