The New York Times is a leading source of independent journalism, and they are seeking an editorial assistant to support columnist Thomas Friedman. This role focuses on providing administrative support, managing schedules, travel arrangements, and maintaining confidentiality while engaging with current affairs. Responsibilities - Manage an ever-changing calendar, including vetting, prioritizing and scheduling meeting requests - Book complex travel, make reservations and handle any changes in travel arrangements - File all expenses for reimbursement - Handle a large volume of requests from internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, answering inquiries, resolving problems, and making appropriate referrals - Keep abreast of the news in the areas of coverage - Verify the accuracy of the information contained in columns and occasional guest essays - Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and discretion in regard to all matters and documents - Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world - You will report to an Assistant Editor, Opinion Skills - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Strong interpersonal, organizational and decision-making skills - At least 1 year of experience in journalism, conducting research and fact-checking and/or text editing for published media strongly preferred - Creative problem solving, coupled with a 'no task too big or small' attitude - The ability to embrace change at a moment's notice, shift priorities easily and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline driven environment - Flexibility to work weekends and evenings - A familiarity with Tom Friedman's work and interests, a passion for news and a respect for New York Times values, including independent journalism - A sharp eye for detail - Superb administrative skills - An ability to multi-task and problem solve under pressure - A devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification - The ability to dive into unfamiliar material on deadline - Discretion in handling sensitive editorial material - Collegiality and diplomacy are essential - At least 2 years of experience providing administrative support for an executive or media personality - Knowledge of Thomas Friedman's work, and Opinion's columnist roster and frequent contributors - Familiarity with Times Style and the newspaper's standards and ethics guidelines - An appreciation for Opinion journalism and understanding of the broader media landscape Benefits - Medical, dental and vision benefits - Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s) - A company-matching 401(k) plan - Paid vacation - Paid sick days - Paid parental leave - Tuition reimbursement - Professional development programs Company Overview - The New York Times is powered by the idea that independent, deeply reported journalism fuels a healthy and engaged society.
