Corporate Counsel – Federal & State Advocacy

Job Description: • Support federal and state advocacy initiatives to advance a favorable business climate for Assurant and its products. • Identify and engage with legislative and regulatory proposals that impact our business. • Build and maintain relationships with legislators, regulators, and industry stakeholders in a designated set of states. • Provide legal analysis and strategic counsel to internal stakeholders and the VP, Federal & State Advocacy, on impactful legislation and regulatory actions. • Support timely and informed business decisions influenced by governmental activity. • Support Assurant’s advocacy priorities within relevant federal and state trade associations. • Maintain strong working relationships with internal and external trade association stakeholders. • Help identify, anticipate, and influence key insurance policy issues. • Represent the company professionally at all times and ensure strict adherence to corporate policies, ethics rules, lobbying requirements, and applicable campaign finance and gift laws. • Support administration and compliance related to the Assurant PAC. Requirements: • A minimum of 3–4 years of relevant legal experience advising businesses or trade associations on legislative and regulatory issues, particularly in state insurance regulation • Demonstrated experience advocating before state and/or federal legislative or regulatory bodies • Strong understanding of federal and state insurance statutes, regulations, and legislative processes • Prior experience within a state insurance regulatory agency, insurance company, trade association, or law firm preferred • Knowledge of legal frameworks governing insurance company operations • Highly motivated, dependable, detail‑oriented, and well‑organized • Strong judgment with the ability to operate autonomously and manage multiple priorities under tight timelines • Proven ability to work collaboratively and provide strategic legal guidance in cross‑functional settings • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism • Strong executive presence, interpersonal skills, and advanced written and verbal communication abilities • Undergraduate degree • Juris Doctorate Benefits: • Health insurance • Professional development opportunities • Paid time off • Remote work options
